Synopsis:
It’s the afternoon of Christmas Eve, Private Detective CACTUS O’RILEY and her assistant FRED BOOKER are wrapping up affairs at the office. Cactus struck out on her own, but finds that work to be less than fulfilling. She wants to really help people, not just catch liars and cheaters. She encourages Fred to go home and see his mother, but before he can leave two escaped prisoners NEVILLE SMEDLEY and RAMON RAMIREZ burst in demanding to see Jake Marley, Neville’s brandishing a gun. Private Detective and Charles Dickens enthusiast, Jake Marley, is the deceased former occupant of Cactus O’Reily’s office. Smedley claims that Marley framed him and wants revenge. Ramirez is an illegal alien who was arrested, he wants to meet up with his pregnant wife, who should be passing by during Procession of Las Posadas.

Things become even more complicated when Fred’s mother, ADELAIDE BOOKER, arrives. Fred convinces her that they are hosting a Murder Mystery Party planned special for her. Cactus begins to believe Smedley’s story about being set up by Marley, and possibly the Mayor, for embezzling $2 Million dollars from The Tiny Tim Fund. Cactus and Fred dig through Marley’s files and collection of old Dickens’ books for clues, but they are interrupted by a the drunk and love lorn Deputy District Attorney, Stuart Windsor. He’s still upset that Cactus won’t go to the Mayor’s ball with him. Cactus is able to convince Windsor that Smedley is innocent, by finding all the evidence hidden by Marley in the office. Windsor promises to get Smedley’s case before a judge and allows Ramirez to go find his wife. The party breaks up in a good spirits. Cactus and Windsor are left alone kissing under the mistletoe.

Character Breakdown:

CACTUS O’RILEY (30-40s): Female private detective. She beats to the tune of her own drum, and has no problem breaking rules when it’s in service of the greater good.

FRED BOOKER (20s): Male or Female, Cactus O’Riley’s assistant. Fred is a great ‘His Girl Friday’ to Cactus, because he/she is used to managing difficult personalities; or one in particular his/her mother Adelaide.

ADELAIDE BOOKER (40-60s): Female, Fred’s mother. She comes off as nosey and overbearing, but really she just wants to be included.

STUART WINDSOR: (30-40s): Male, Deputy DA. He and Cactus used to date, but she wasn’t interested in settling down. He’s been trying to win her back ever since.

NEVILLE SMEDLEY (40-60s): Male, he was convicted of embezzling money. He’s bookish and not particularly friendly, so one might overlook him and/or take advantage of him.

RAMON RAMIREZ (20s): Male, he was caught and arrested for entering the country illegally. Ramon is a good man in a very bad situation, his goal is to reconnect with his wife before the birth of his baby.
