George Bernard Shaw's classic comedy is a delightful battlefield of wit where chocolate outranks bullets and Romance takes a riotous skewering. On a moonlit night in 1885, a Serbian soldier running from battle climbs a drainpipe into the bedroom of a young Bulgarian lady—and the hilarity begins. All's fair in love and war!

Bernard Shaw (with Oscar Wilde) was the leading humorist of his day, but his famous wit should not obscure his important role in revolutionizing British drama.  Inspired by Henrik Ibsen, the pioneer of modern realistic drama, Shaw transformed the frothy, sentimental theatre of Victorian London by writing comedies that consider moral, political and economic issues.  

Says co-director Melanie Jones, “If Shakespeare is the bread and butter of theatre, Shaw is the fruit and vegetables--a basic building block, good for the health and full of surprising colors and flavors.  It is great fun and leaves you with something significant to digest.”

Says co-director Mark Piatelli, “Over one hundred years have passed since Shaw wrote Arms and the Man, yet his satire about mankind's idealized notions of love and war is as modern as ever. We haven't changed that much in a century, apparently.  The characters are friends and neighbors in old-fashioned clothes whose ideas (and foolishness) are still timely.”
