ESCANABA IN LOVE is the prequel to ESCANABA IN DA MOONLIGHT by playwright and well-known actor Jeff Daniels.
Little Fish Theatre is bringing back the highly successful 2009 production of "Moonlight" as a mid-week companion to "Love."
In ESCANABA IN LOVE we find ourselves at the "world-famous Soady deer camp" in the midst of World War II (40 years before "Moonlight" takes place). Being called up for service has forced Junior to think about Death: he marries Big Betty upon first meeting at the Porcelain Bus, after he wins her in a kissing contest. He breaks the cardinal rule of "NO women at Deer Camp," and brings Betty there to spend their honeymoon in his favorite place in the world, much to the dismay of the rest of camp inhabitants. Lots of laughs, a little drama and a nice warm-and-fuzzy ending. Definitely will be a crowd-pleaser.
ESCANABA IN LOVE character breakdown:
ALL MEN MUST SING... a simple and short "jig" that appears throughout the show. Be prepared to learn the song at auditions and sing it. Don't need golden pipes, just enough to hold a tune.
EVERYONE will need to master the Upper Peninsula accent. It will be help to get a taste of it from you at auditions. (The film "Fargo" should be of help.)
ALPHONSE SOADY; 70’s. Great grandpa Alphonse built this camp and this family, and he shot the great Soady Ridge Buck. Feisty, full of life and somewhat confused at times. Has sudden, unreserved mood swings.
ALBERT SOADY SR.; 45+ A widower, he does most of the chores in camp and is the serious, taciturn member in camp. Still misses his wife, but he is proud of his boy. Senior must be capable of showing many emotions while remaining reserved throughout show.
ALBERT SOADY JR.; needs to pass for 18. Full of the enthusiasm, confidence, innocence and inexperience of youth. Big range of emotions. Must sing the "jig" as a lullaby to Betty.
SALTY JIM NEGAMANEE; 40-60 "A Man o da Sea", even if he’s never been off the Great Lakes. Alcoholic, crippled and forgetful, he still attacks life with relish and lots of energy. Has a tricky scene with Big Betty towards end of the show. Actor needs to be able to handle a the difficulties of the "physical aspect" of the role, and be able to bring some light to a dark moment in the show. (I'm happy to chat with anyone who is interested in this role prior to auditions.)
BIG BETTY BALOU; needs to read as early 20's. She's got huge energy. She's rough and tumble, think Rosie the Riveter with an attitude. She’s been on her own since her early teens and can take care of herself in every way, but she comes from a rough and checkered past. She can out hunt, out drink, out dance and out talk any of the men. At the end of the show she sheds the rough exterior for a poignant and tender scene with Albert Sr.
